Workshops

Music in 3/4 Time

This workshop is based on learning music set to a 3/4 rhythm (as heard in a waltz, for example).  Music in 3/4 time has a natural swing or flow that is very well suited to the simple, quiet nature of the dulcimer.

We will work on about six tunes ranging from very simple to Intermediate level.  Included will be information on five simple techniques (AKA cheap tricks) used to bring out the musical flow of these pieces,

If you are currently at the stage in your musical life where you can play simple tunes and basic chords, this workshop will help you transition from just playing notes as written in the tab to making music.

Each participant will receive a booklet containing about a dozen songs ranging from Advanced Beginner to Intermediate level difficulty.

Introduction ToThe World of Dulcimer
If you have ever wanted to play a musical instrument this is your chance. The mountain dulcimer has a very beautiful sound and it is quite easy to learn the basics. For this workshop you will not need to have any musical background and you will not need to be able to read music. The only prerequisite is that you can tell your right hand from your left.

We will cover the basics of strumming with your right hand, playing the melody with your left and and reading tablature (the simple notation system dulcimer players use). At the end of the session you will be able to play a couple of simple pieces and be in a position to learn more if you so chose.

No stress. No judgement. Just relax and have a good time sharing music.

My vision of dulcimer music can be summarized as “simple, quiet, and beautiful”.
I believe that having a good foundation in technique allows a person to more easily produce the music that they seek.  I also believe that everyone has their own musical goals and my role is to help people achieve their goals.

I reside in Sonoma County where I do some performing and play with dulcimer friends as often as possible.  I have taught at the Redwood Dulcimer Gatherings, Redwood Dulcimer Day and Berkeley Dulcimer Gathering as well as with private students.  My current musical interests include classic country music and Pop Standards.
